If Honda would have made the 1980's 1000cc, V4, gear driven cam bike light as possible they would have ruled the street and tracks. Instead it weighed a ton which made all the rest of its awesome useless.

Problem with the modern Fireblades , they became generic. Nothing special at all about them compared to the other inline 4 bikes from Japan. Now they are heading into irrelevance. I honestly don't know why the current CBR1000 is not competitive in superbike. Honda use to be innovative and making bikes like no other. That has been long gone since the RC51

Had one of the early ones, after it had been essentially around the world, following a Honda 250 scrambler. It had all kinds of electrical glitches, including a taste for eating fuses like candy, until I put higher-rated ones in. Mechanically, it was bulletproof. The controls were non-intuitive--the gearbox desperately needed a fifth speed--there was a huge gap between second and third, so you had to know which gear you were in at all times, and could not shift by ear. It also felt rather clumsy compared to later motorcycles I rode. The numbers were there, but they didn't work together. I later test-rode a Triumph 650, and was amazed at the balance, agility, and especially the slick gearbox. Everything worked together. I didn't buy it, but the comparison with the memories of the Honda 450 was stark (although it was a much later model). I can see why the Honda failed to steal sales from the Brits. I also test-rode a (much later) Harley-Davidson Sportster, and found it to be a bit clumsy in comparison, with a high center of gravity and a rather clunky gearbox you had to negotiate with (though I loved the buckhorn handlebars). That was the bike I was actually expecting to buy (at the time, Harley's introductory model was attractively priced, and there was a sale on top of that). But I didn't buy it--missing out on the last time an HD was a bargain. It would have held its value, too--much better than the competition.

Afternoon Bart - I have just watched your video and wanted to say a big thank you. You mentioning my channel - especially the Sportster history series - meant the world to me (& Anna!). There have been many problems in the OT household these last few months as Anna's health contiunes to be dreadful problem; it means that video making has to take a back seat all too often. But watching your video, with your generous supporting mention, put huge smiles on both our faces: THANK YOU! It feels like 'vindication' to me - if that's not too melodramatic - but after years of hard work, I feel elated that you appreciate my work. Thank you again, Bart. (Anna said about your comments, "It was lovely, truly lovely.") Cheers, Chris

I was there back in the day. Beside the track. All the classes were gripping, 125, 250 and 500. I still can't believe that Honda never built a version with lights and indicators, and I can't believe Yamaha and Suzuki only built theirs for 2 years. Even today, I'm sure they'd sell like hotcakes.

Old bikes sound beter because new ones are restricted by pollution norms. But they are really not, as you said for beginners. You also need room and mechanical skill to keep them running. And parts are hard to find and expensive. So comparing them to modern low cost (retro) motorcycles is a bit absurd. Many people like me that own classic bikes also have a modern bike simply because they are more reliable, practical and cheaper for daily commuting. Personally i own a vintage Lambretta from the 50's. This thing doesn't even have blinkers. You have to use your arms as indicators. For 90% of the people, vintage bikes are not a good idea in my opinion.

20:53 You are COMPLETLY misinformed about Royal Enfield: Royal Enfield's outdated big singles were Pre 2009 NOT pre 2018 models. The big single you showed in the pictures at 20:53 is actually the post 2009 UCE model which made the company from least seller in India to becoming best seller in the segment. Until 2009 Royal Enfield produced Bullet that was mechanically same as 1960s British made Bullet but in 2009 they launched their first next gen bullet which was called UCE (Unit Construction Engine, where engine was a single unit unlike earlier where as cylinder, gearbox, clutch were separate units). The Classic series was introduced in 2010 with UCE engine and turned the company's fortune overnight, it was discontinued in 2019 with launch of j-series 350cc that removed any problem that UCE had. The 650 twins since launch to this day add negligible profit to the company. Their main bread and butter is 350cc.

I have two Zongshen motorcycles (re-branded as CSC here in California.) Both are 250cc singles. SG250 ("Cafe-racer" LOL 230cc air-cooled Honda copy, carbed) which is okay. RX3 (250cc water-cooled, FI'ed "Adventure Bike" LOL) I have to say suspensions on both of them are terrible. Just too stiff like rigid. I put after-market shocks on SG250 but not so easy to do the same for mono-shock RX3. This is my first "Adventure" bike. I usually like old things and had 79 XT500, 98 KDX200, 78 IT175. RX3 is nowhere near (sure it's not a dirt bike but..) My most modern 2014 NC700 got much better suspension.. some people call it as poor-man's adventure bike, right? I have Sundiro Honda (Chinese-Japanese) CRF190L in Japan. It has good suspension and enjoyable on dirt with 100MPG gas mileage.

IMO I agree with the commentator, the only people able to go back and ride 2-strokes were the ones that made the transition from 2-stroke to 4-stroke was the likes of the Valentino Rossi era riders and we all know who dominated that transition. Yes I agree current modern day Moto-GP riders would have a very difficult time adapting to the 500GP Era 2-strokes.

My first bike was a '76 550k, same color scheme. It took me many miles, but had the annoying habit of always popping out of 3rd gear. I soon learned to just skip through. I finally broke down and tore it apart, bringing the whole gear cluster in to a Honda mechanic who examined them and told me what to replace. I did, and for a few weeks it shifted fine, then went back to its old habit... 🫤 I eventually bought an '86 600 Hurricane and absolutely loved it. (#5 and #6 are a 599 and a XX.)

I think its worth noting how many of the ideas that went into the fireblade were concept tested in the development of the CBR400RR NC29. The twin spar multipart frame, the retention of the unfashionable RWP forks, massively braced swingarm and even that newer 90's styling, as early as 1989.

XLH 1000 by the Harley bread machine company. They figured out how to make mechanical points and unproven electric ignition work together to make almost every motorcycle ride ended with the rider walking to the nearest payphone to call for a pick up. Week engine, ho-hum design and just poorly made machines. Harley under AMF stunk up the universe with their 70's motorcycles, lead by the 1000 Sportster. Been there, lived it, got the well worn riding boot soles from pushing and walking.

Back in 1980 I bought a CB450 that had been a bit neglected. But it was cheap. I sparkled it up with some Autosol and new paint and it looked much better. I rode that puppy to school for two years and then sold it to a young guy who seemed quite impressed with it. Surprised am I to tell you that I ran into that (now older) fellow not long ago and he has been riding that old CB450 as a daily driver ever since. I'd call that better than respectable quality and performance.
